Presidential, parliamentary and municipal elections are scheduled for 20 May Politicians are pleased that they are all being held on the same date. Others have voiced criticism. For example Julien Nimubona, a political scientist, argues that the election of a president for a seven-year term is of national importance, so it should not be linked to electing members of parliament in specific constituencies and local-government leaders in the municipalities.
A second round of voting for the presidency is likely, and Nimubona warns that the results of the other elections might be declared void, depending on how other parties than the one of the future president fared in them. Tensions are running particularly high in the provinces of Ngozi, Muyinga and Kirundo in northern Burundi and Makamba in the south.

Please contact customerservices lexology. The energy sector in Burundi is today very circumscribed. It is mainly made up of the national utility “Regideso”, who benefits from a legal monopoly for electricity transmission, distribution and supply, renewed in for 25 years. The generation capacities are owned and operated by Regideso, are mainly hydro-electric and are very old and subject to chronic sub-investments, as is the case for the transmission and distribution assets too.
Most of the electrical equipment date from before the Independence in , and any additional generation capacity may harm and cause outages due to the said obsolescence of the grid. Additionally, the country is frequently struggling – due to currency issues – to import oil in sufficient quantities for gas-fired plants and personal generators, as has been regularly observed for the last decade.
It has a huge demand for small and medium scale energy projects which may match in particular with their agricultural needs mechanization and food-conservation , the global welfare of the local population schools and hospitals and the potential mineral extraction in the region. Putting aside the political crisis triggered in , and considering the current difficulties of the country for importing energy resources and the needs in terms of agriculture, welfare and peace, the country would be ideally placed for developing numerous renewable energy projects.
OHCRC: Burundi’s elections aren’t ‘credible and free’
In December , a video began to circulate on social media in Burundi. A brief coup attempt failed to topple Nkurunziza, who won the subsequent election by a landslide. By , over four hundred thousand refugees had fled the country to neighbouring states. Who owned the it, and what had gone on there? BBC Africa Eye gathered testimonies from the former owner of the house, as well as three witnesses who claimed to have been held as captives or to have worked as guards inside the house.
The story of this house exemplifies a pattern of underground state violence in Burundi, by which the government of Nkurunziza confiscates and reappropriates domestic spaces across the country for the purposes of torture, detention and extrajudicial killing.

The meeting was followed by consultations. On 22 August, Council members issued a press statement reiterating their concern over the political situation, the slow progress of the inter-Burundi dialogue led by the East African Community, and the lack of engagement by the government in that regard.

Vucic on the occasion “expressed great gratitude for the country’s decision to revoke its recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo. Vucic handed to Nyamitwe a letter for Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza, in which he also expressed gratitude for the move, and invited him to visit Serbia, so they could work together on fomenting inter-state relations. The president also announced that Serbia would soon open its diplomatic office in Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura.
Nyamitwe conveyed President Nkurunziza’s greetings, and stressed that the clear instruction to revoke the recognition of unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo came precisely from the head of state – after all the circumstances had been carefully considered, including relevant international acts, such as UN Security Council Resolution , and the friendly relations between Belgrade and Bujumbura dating back to the former Yugoslavia era.
Nyamitwe reiterated Burundi’s support for Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The two interlocutors agreed that there were many opportunities to develop cooperation in the areas of trade, defense and security, mining and public finance, as well as in education, culture and sports.

NAIROBI Reuters – Burundi began an official period of mourning for President Pierre Nkurunziza on Wednesday, a day after the announcement of his death from a heart attack aged 55 shocked the impoverished East African nation he had ruled with an iron grip. Wearing face masks and gloves to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, senior government officials, foreign ambassadors and religious leaders lined up to sign a condolence book opened in his memory at the presidential palace.
Air ambulance service AMREF told Reuters they had flown her to Nairobi on May 21 for medical treatment, but declined to confirm widespread reports in Kenyan media that this was for treatment for COVID, the lung disease caused by the new coronavirus. It remains unclear whether the powerful cabal of army generals and security chiefs who propped up Nkurunziza during his year rule remain united over the succession.
Nkurunziza had been due to stand down in August, making way for retired general Evariste Ndayishimiye, who won an election last month that the opposition said was marred by violence and rigging.
Reminiscent of previous election periods in Burundi, the months leading of violence has shifted from a concentration in urban Bujumbura to a.
